Through a partnership with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the SC Alliance of YMCAs has awarded 16 grants to local Ys to increase opportunities for physical activity and healthy eating in their after school and summer camp programs. In 2013 the SC Alliance of YMCAs received a state Pioneering Healthier Communities grant focused on state initiatives and public policy issues designed to make the healthy choice the easy choice in South Carolina. One of the strategies is to implement Healthy Eating and Physical Activity (HEPA) standards in all YMCA Out of School Time programs such as after school care and summer day camp. “The YMCA is one of SC’s leading nonprofit providers of afterschool programs, thus the impact these new standards can have on SC children is significant,” said Amy Splittgerber, the Executive Director for the SC Alliance of YMCAs.
