Tuesday afternoon, the Honorable Donald B. Hocker sentenced John Kennedy Hughey to life imprisonment for the December 4, 1995 murders of Tasheka Jackson and Luvenia Harris. Hughey originally received two death sentences following his October 1997 jury trial. On May 7, 2009, however, a Circuit Court Judge ordered Hughey receive a new sentencing hearing because the jurors in his case were instructed they could not consider mercy as a reason to impose life sentences. Appeals of this order by the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office were not successful.
